Dr. Ioannis Karakassis is Professor at the Biology Department, head of the Marine Ecology Laboratory and currently vice-rector of academic affairs at the University of Crete. He has coordinated or participated in 21 national and 18 EU funded projects, 17 of which are relevant to Aquaculture-environment interactions.
Coordinator of the SHoCMed initiative and the WG on Site Selection and Carrying Capacity of Mediterranean Aquaculture of the GFCM and member of the WG on Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture of FAO.
Research interests include anthropogenic effects on marine ecosystems, development of uni- and multivariate mathematical techniques for the analysis of ecological data, development of indicators for the assessment of biodiversity and level of health/disturbance of marine ecosystems.
Author or co-author of 100 peer reviewed papers.
