Kermes oak (Quercus coccifera L.) grows especially in maquis areas and has a wide distribution in our country. Kermes oak offers high amount of biomass. Therefore, it might be an alternative raw material source for some industrial processes of wood products. In this study, the hemicelluloses isolated from wood of the kermes oak were esterified with palmitoyl, stearoyl and oleoyl chloride. After esterification, the products were characterized. The substitution degrees of ester products were determined between 0.63 and 0.94 and yield percentages between 45.20 and 57.53. The intensity values of FTIR spectral bands at 3410, 2922, 2854 and 1742 cm-1 from ester products revealed that the derivation of hemicelluloses occurred. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that ester products were more prone to thermal decomposition than natural hemicelluloses. The characteristic properties of obtained hemicellulose esters indicated that these esters might be appropriate for production of biodegradable and environmentally degradable plastics, resins and films.
